English translation: Herfst describe themselves as a Belgian extreme metal band in the broadest sense of the word.
These guys have been around since 1999. They offer a wild combination of black/death/thrash metal with a penchant for morbidity and horror. Enough reason alone to keep an eye out for these guys.
The Fall (2003) was a debut demo that you don’t often encounter in the scene. They manage to push boundaries and ignite dark sparks in our soul with every record they make.

Meanwhile, the sad news emerged that singer Matthieu would leave the group. Regrettably so, but with a renewed line up they are ready to kick more ass in the future. Bram (lead guitars) - Collin (guitars) - Kurt (bass) - Steve (drums) are one by one musicians of professional calibre.
It’s about time they receive their well deserved appreciation.

There is a lot going on on this record. She Dwells The Moors inspires to nightmarish visions, even when listening in broad daylight. Guitar riffs that cut through the toughest flesh, vocals from the mouth of madness. Devilish drums. This song is the proof of how several extreme genres blend seamlessly into each other. A trait we haven’t encountered much in our careers.

Dark, organized chaos. That’s how we would describe Herfst. Not the kind of chaos you’d rather avoid, but making the listener feel as if he descended into a deep, dark hole. An inescapable prison. We feel the claws of darkness grab us & squeeze our throats. Morbid, macabre visions surround us. The sun outside is shining, but we see only dark clouds when closing our eyes. Approximately five minutes of excellent guitarwork, drums and creepy vocals. No, we clearly won’t escape out of this alive.

Three Spells starts with an ominous undertoneoften found in horror movies where creepy creatures threaten to tear their innocent victims apart. Chilling, eerie sounds pierce our hearts without compassion.

But the most 'exciting' song without compromising the rest for us remains the title & closing song. Toward Haunted Shores is a superb eight-minute trip that leaves us in shards. Black, death, thrash and horror elements merge mercilessly. Apart from the complex guitar parts accompany furious drums as a recipe for the ultimate deathblow. All instruments fuse beautifully leading to al almost trance like state.

Half an hour or melancholic, dark and nekromantic black / death metal. To top it all the bonus track Code Noir delivers us 9 minutes of darkness. Maddening guitars, one anxiety attack after another. One more time pulverizing our brains. One more time delivering goosebumps. One more time in the darkest thoughts of our soul.

After writing this article the morning sun peeped through the window and actually even hurt our eyes.
This is how we like our breakfast.

The Herfst headquarters also had the pleasure to receive this little mail this morning. To claim we're humbled & had an acute case of the goosebumps by these words is a severe understatement. Fuck ‘fame’, fuck ‘rockstardom’… Whatever that means.

THIS is exactly why we do what we do.
We'd like to extend our gratitude for not only making our day but also keeping up our spirits in these turbulent times.

Half assed English translation below.

“Hello,

I received your new record yesterday.
I put it in the cd tray this morning when I left to work, had an integral listen and I needed to get something off my chest.
Take this however you want…

GODFUCKINGDAMMIT Herfst is amazing.

I'm 40. I’ve been listening to metal for 28 years now. Your EP is exactly the 1550th record in my possession. I estimate that I heard more than ten thousand records in my life ranging from KISS to Cannibal Corpse, from Journey to Cradle of Filth.
I believe your work is somewhere up there with the greats.

After one mere listen I experienced 3 cases of severe goosebumps. You know… Those HEAVY ones.
Something I experienced with your previous work before (which I all possess except for the very first demo).

I have no clue of your age and in so many ways it doesn’t matter. But I’m hearing SO MUCH experience, maturity and above all MUSIC. I can hear Adrian Smith (Maiden), I hear Jon Schaffer (Iced Earth). I hear hints of Amon Amarth in those riffs off yours. Grunts remind me of Amorphis of yore (Privilege of Evil & The Karelian Isthmus). There are hints of Dimmu Borgir and Old Man’s Child. Even Metallica (start of Code Noir)…

All this in the first listening session!

Without being mere copycats, in beautiful balance.

And your stuff is fast. FAST. I love myself some slow music (genre Skullcrusher by Overkill, not ballads).
I’m a headbanger in heart and soul (maybe that’s why my synapses are a tad slower than they should be).
I love fast riffing, ballsy drumbeats & an intense session of neck wrestling. All of this is present in your work without resolving to uninspired noise.

There’s depth behind the speed. Intensity. Melody. Storytelling.

I’ve rekindled my interest in Belgian metal ever since Channel Zero reunited. I couldn’t believe they were the best the Belgian scene had to offer. I discovered Sengir (RIP), Cyclone (in the fridge for 25 years), appreciate Welkin and find Surhrim immensely entertaining. But Herfst… You guys play everyone else back to kindergarten.

Let’s face it. You’ll never get the massive recognition of say a Channel Zero due to the niche black/death genre (sorry for pigeonholing you into that label, the music is way more than just that). But best Belgian metal? Hands down! Fuck man…

Due to my job and kids I’m not the ‘mobile man’ I used to be.
I’ll even have to skip Graspop this year.
But if you guys ever play in West Flanders PLEASE let me know. I’ll be there in Oostende (3 October) & Roeselare (24th).

There you go. I hàd to get this off my chest.

I hope you guys will find a record label soon, you’ll become dirty filthy rich yet keep on playing your compositions without falling for the whole rock star thing.

I swear that I’ll STILL be listening to your music when I turn 80. The headbanging will probably be with less vigor, but there WILL be heads banging. Even if I’d have to poke other people to do so with my walking cane.

Please do me a favor and inform me whenever you release a record in the upcoming 40 years.

I’ll take another listen now. Hell yeah.

A fan for life.

Nick.”

Line up Change...

Sad news, everyone.
After 4 amazing & intense years Matthieu decided to head for different horizons.

'Dear followers, friends and foes,
The time has come to announce that I quit my activities in Herfst from this day on. My future plans are taking shape, and unfortunately I am unable to deliver the level of attention the band needs. The past 4 years with the band have been absolutely amazing. We experienced a wide range of adventures, played awesome shows in several countries, and got to meet a lot of cool people. I wish to express my respect and loyalty towards the band, and I wish them the absolute best in the future, because they deserve it 110%. I'm walking my own path now, with nothing but the best memories about the past. Keep the kvlt alive and the flame forever burning.
Cheers Matthieu'

We had a wild ride together yet respect and understand his decision to follow other paths & wish him all the best.

All writing was Bram’s department so musically and lyrically nothing will change. The madness that surrounded us these last few months will definitively lead to ferocious new material and disregarding all these setbacks we are stoked to continue our nekromantic legacy.

We have started writing some challenging new material and have some exciting announcements to make soon.

All shows will continue as planned.
